Principles

Module Purpose

  • Introduce the key principles that guide this curriculum.

  • Provide tools for applying these principles and commitments to the work that we do to support others.

The principles we share in this module we have identified as meaningful to our work. We encourage you to share your reflections on these principles as well as to provide any suggestions on other ways of thinking about this work. We see these principles as dynamic and ever-changing as we collectively engage in continued reflection and learning.

Note: This module provides us an opportunity to ground our thinking in a self-reflective and self-aware framework. It may be helpful to have a blank piece of paper and a pen when completing this module.

Guiding Premises

We begin with the main premise that:

“The work that we do and how we do it” is influenced by “who we are”.

We also understand that “who we are” is ever-changing, and is shaped by our experiences, our values and beliefs, our language, and the lenses through which we view the world, all of which mutually influence and shape one another.

The interactive image below helps us reflect on how our experiences, values and beliefs, the language we use, and the lenses through which we view this work affect how we do this work. Beginning in the center, click on each circle for more information. You will see specific ways that we have applied these ideas to this curriculum as well as access handouts and exercises for your own reflection.

Key Commitments

The premises we just explored in the previous section, help to inform our commitments to promoting healing and preventing violence and strengthen our ability to respond to others with empathy and compassion. These four key commitments guide our work and promote healing on all levels. You will see these commitments revisited throughout this curriculum.

Putting It All Together: Integrated Exercise

In this integrated exercise, we practice using the information in this module to strengthen our understandings of and responses to violence and trauma. Throughout each sub-component of this integrated exercise, we turn to a story of one family’s experience: the Flores/Moore family.
